Chick-fil-A: A Big Supporter of Food Safety and the LGMA

A great example of a company committed to food safety is Chick-fil-A.  Now the nation’s number one chicken restaurant chain, Chick-fil-A also serves over 160 million pounds of produce each year.

It’s good news for consumers that over 99 percent of the leafy greens produced in California are grown under a system of mandatory government inspection. But what makes the biggest impact on the safety of leafy greens is when grocery stores and restaurants require their suppliers to be certified members of the LGMA.

A great example of a company committed to food safety is Chick-fil-A.  What started out as a single restaurant in Georgia in 1946 has grown into one of the nation’s largest fast food chains with over 1,900 locations in 42 states.  Chick-fil-A is now the #1 chicken restaurant chain in the U.S.  In addition to chicken, with menu items like Cobb Salad and Grilled Chicken Cool Wraps, the chain also serves approximately 160 million pounds of produce each year. Because of Chick-fil-A’s commitment to produce safety, the LGMA has become acquainted with Dr. Steven Lyon, Manager Supply Chain Safety at Chick-fil-A.  Steven is such a well-spoken advocate on the importance of food safety to his company, as well as the efforts of the LGMA, we decided to ask him a few questions during a recent produce convention.  In the interview, Steven reminds us that “food safety is critical to the dining experience” at Chick-fil-A – something that fans of the chain should be happy to learn.

Chick-fil-A is such a believer in the LGMA program that they use it as a requirement for all their leafy greens. Here is what Steven had to say about the LGMA:

“What’s critical for us is that we find a program like the LGMA that uses academia, local government as well as industry buy-in and has them tie it all together so we ensure, literally, from farm to the back door of the restaurant that items are produced safely.”
